Seed to Shelf

Seed to Shelf™ is a paid fellowship opportunity for system impacted youth and young adults ages 14 – 26. This year-long, project-based learning experience at Moonwater Farm in Compton is a 24-week skill-building program to increase participant capacity and interest in our food system and economic democracy.

Using items grown and tended at Moonwater Farm, participants create a product or service they can sell.  Using a cooperative economic model, the course focuses on product development, relevant industry certifications, culinary skills, land tending, and business. They also receive a stipend

Program Highlights: 

  • Culturally responsive instruction with BIPOC staff 

  • Student-led inquiry supported by social-emotional learning (SEL) programming

  • Hands-on experiences with farm animals and the natural environment to engage diverse learners

  • Diverse speakers and good food will be provided throughout the program.

Program Structure:

  • Cohort Up to 35 students per cohort,

  • Course consists of three 8-week sessions, 4hrs per week

  • Stipend: $350 per session, based on 88% attendance (Up to $1050)

Educational Approach:

The program employs a nontraditional educational model that challenges consumerism and celebrates cultural diversity through a culture of care, collective action, and storytelling. 

Instructional methods include:

  • Project-Based Learning 

  • Podcasts, Films, and Music 

  • Journaling and Community Circles 

  • Field Visits and Professional Guest Speakers 

  • Direct Instruction and Debate 

  • Artificial Intelligence Tools

Training Workshops:

Participants will receive training in a variety of areas:

●Food Safety and Composting

●Livestock Husbandry and Food Growing ●Aquaponics and Sustainability

●Fiber Arts and Woodworking

●Plant Alchemy and Ceremonial Leadership ●Entrepreneurship, Financial Literacy, and Technology in Agriculture

 

Goals: By the end of the program in June 2025, participants will:

●Develop 2 Minimum Viable Products or Services and create tangible products or services related to urban agriculture.

●Gain 2 Opportunities to Sell Products at Local Farmer's Markets fostering real-world business experience.

●Complete a Business Plan

●Obtain Food Safety Certification

●Establish a Savings Account with proceeds from sales/stipend - Each participant will open a savings account to manage their earnings. ●Access Paid Internship Opportunities - Eligible participants can continue their learning with paid internships at local restaurants or Moonwater Farm.
